10 Must-Do summer Experiences in Downtown Austin

By: Carly H.

I recently took an extended weekend trip to Austin—my first time visiting! Let me tell you, Austin in late June is HOT, but we had an absolute blast— heat, humidity and all. We stayed at the Natiivo, a condo building located in the historic Rainey Street district and within walking distance to tons of restaurants, bars, shops and more. The perfect location for what we were looking for at an affordable price, found through AirBnB.

Downtown Austin in the summertime is such a lively and unique experience. From electric live music to lake paddling and top-tier tacos, downtown Austin is where culture, creativity, and fun collide. Whether you're visiting for the weekend or just looking to explore your own city, I’m sharing the top 10 things we did that made our short trip enjoyable and so worth it! Here's your go-to guide for making the most of Austin’s dynamic downtown core, including a must-visit stop for whiskey lovers.

1. Explore Austin’s Live Music Scene on Sixth Street

Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin lives up to the hype. Stroll down Sixth Street and catch everything from rock bands to bluesy solo acts in bars like The Parish, Maggie Mae’s, and Antone’s. The sound of Austin is alive and well—just follow your ears.

2. Treat Yourself to Austin’s Legendary Food

You simply can’t visit Austin without diving headfirst into the food scene—it’s one of the city’s greatest claims to fame. From legendary barbecue joints to crave-worthy tacos and everything in between, the flavors of Austin are bold, unforgettable, and 100% worth the hype.

First stop: Terry Black’s BBQ, a true icon and an essential for anyone building their Austin BBQ bucket list. Yes, there’s usually a line—but trust me, it’s part of the experience, and it moves faster than you’d think. The beef ribs here are the stuff of legend: massive, smoky, fall-off-the-bone tender, and packed with deep, rich flavor. Add a side of mac and cheese, coleslaw, and a cold drink, and you’ve got one of the best meals you’ll have in Texas—maybe anywhere.

Next up, tacos—because Austin is just as famous for its taco culture as it is for brisket. We made the right call by heading to Torchy’s Tacos, an Austin-born favorite that takes creative liberties in the best way possible. Whether you’re a fan of bold, spicy flavors or more classic street-style tacos, their menu has something for everyone. (Pro tip: don’t skip the Trailer Park taco—“make it trashy” is the way to go.)

For those wanting a little bit of everything in one place, Fareground Food Hall in the heart of downtown is a must-visit. This stylish, airy space brings together a curated collection of local vendors under one roof. You’ll find everything from globally inspired small plates to gourmet burgers, handmade pasta, and health-forward fare—all perfect for grazing, sharing, and fueling your next Austin adventure. It’s a great option if you’re with a group or just can’t decide what you’re in the mood for.

Whether you're craving smoky barbecue, fiery salsa, globally inspired bites, Austin delivers at every turn. Come hungry—you won’t leave that way. Totally worth the extra pounds I came home with. 🤭

3. Sip Infused Whiskey at Standard Proof’s Downtown Tasting Room

Looking for a unique whiskey tasting experience in downtown Austin? Make your way to the Standard Proof Whiskey Co. Tasting Room, where bold flavors meet laid-back Southern hospitality.

Tucked just steps from the heart of the city, this inviting spot is a haven for whiskey lovers and curious sippers alike. Inside, you'll find a relaxed, modern space with cold A/C (yes, please) and a friendly, knowledgeable team ready to walk you through their award-winning infused whiskey line. Whether you're escaping the Central Texas heat or just looking for a flavorful stop between exploring the city, this place hits the sweet spot.

Standard Proof’s signature whiskey flights feature infused expressions that push boundaries while honoring tradition. Some crowd favorites include:

Prefer to sip something chilled and creative? Their cocktail menu rotates with the season and always delivers—whether you're in the mood for a classic Old Fashioned with a twist or something citrusy and refreshing.

What really sets this tasting room apart is the vibe: unpretentious, welcoming, and fun. The team goes out of their way to make sure every guest feels right at home, whether you're a whiskey novice or a seasoned connoisseur. You’ll leave with a few new favorite flavors—and probably a bottle or two to take home.

So if you're wandering around downtown and need a break from the sun (or the crowds), pop into Standard Proof, grab a whiskey flight, and cool down with something truly delicious. Walk-ins welcome, good vibes guaranteed.

4. Kayak or Paddleboard on Lady Bird Lake

Just steps from the hustle of downtown, Lady Bird Lake offers a peaceful outdoor escape that locals swear by—and visitors quickly fall in love with. This urban reservoir winds through the city, flanked by parks, trails, and skyline views that make you forget you're in the middle of one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.

For a truly Austin experience, rent a paddleboard, kayak, or canoe from one of the nearby outfitters like Austin Rowing Dock or Live Love Paddle, and drift your way along the calm waters. Whether you're soaking in the early morning stillness or catching golden hour as the sun dips behind the skyline, there's no better way to experience the city’s natural beauty.

You’ll pass by iconic sights like the Congress Avenue Bridge, Zilker Park, and the lush greenery of the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. Keep an eye out for turtles sunning on rocks, herons gliding low over the water, and paddleboarders with dogs onboard—it’s peak Austin in the best way.

Whether you're looking for a morning workout, an afternoon adventure, or a romantic sunset float, Lady Bird Lake is the kind of escape that recharges you—all without ever leaving the city center.

5. Take a Dip in the Iconic Barton Springs Pool

When the Texas heat kicks in, there’s no better place to cool off than Barton Springs Pool—a true Austin treasure. Fed by natural underground springs and kept at a refreshing 68–70°F year-round, this massive, spring-fed pool sits within Zilker Park and feels like a magical mix of city escape and natural oasis. Honestly, the water was a little cold for me, but my partner who does an ice bath daily wasn’t phased. 😆

Locals and visitors alike flock here to swim, sunbathe, and soak in the laid-back vibe. With its grassy hillsides, clear water, and unbeatable skyline views, it’s the perfect spot for a lazy afternoon or a quick dip between exploring downtown. Pro tip: bring a towel, some sunscreen, and a sense of adventure—the first jump in is brisk, but totally worth it.

Whether you're looking to swim laps, people-watch, or just float under the Texas sun, Barton Springs is a must-do experience that captures Austin at its most effortlessly cool.

6. See the Congress Avenue Bridge Bats at Sunset

One of the most unexpected—and unforgettable—things to do in downtown Austin? Watching bats. Yes, really.

From late spring through early fall, just as the sun begins to set, 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge, transforming the twilight sky into a swirling, fluttering cloud of wings. It’s the largest urban bat colony in North America, and it’s become one of Austin’s most beloved—and uniquely weird—traditions.

Locals and tourists alike gather along the bridge, the adjacent trails, or even take to the water in kayaks and bat-watching cruises to witness the nightly spectacle. As the sky darkens, the bats stream out in waves, heading east in search of dinner—namely, thousands of insects each. (If you're bug-averse, consider this their gift to the city.)

There’s something oddly magical about watching the natural world collide with city life as the downtown skyline glows behind them. It’s eerie, beautiful, and a little surreal—but it’s also peak Austin: unfiltered, wild, and proud of the strange things that make this city so memorable.

Whether you're seeing it for the first time or the fiftieth, this is one of those “you just have to be there” moments that captures Austin’s spirit like nothing else.

7. Shop Local on South Congress

Take a short walk south of the river and spend an afternoon on South Congress Avenue (SoCo). This iconic Austin strip is home to vintage shops, indie boutiques, boot stores like Allens Boots, and some of the city’s best people-watching.

8. Take a Free Tour of the Texas State Capitol

If you're looking to mix a little history into your downtown Austin adventure, a visit to the Texas State Capitol is a must. Just a short walk north of downtown’s core, this grand 19th-century building offers a chance to step back in time and experience the heart of Texas politics, architecture, and pride—all in one place.

Completed in 1888, the Capitol stands taller than even the U.S. Capitol in D.C. (a fact Texans are especially proud of.) Constructed from distinctive sunset-red granite, it’s a stunning example of Renaissance Revival architecture. From the intricate details on the rotunda ceiling to the echo of footsteps in the historic Senate and House chambers, the Capitol offers a truly immersive and awe-inspiring experience.

The best part? It’s completely free to tour. You can take a self-guided walk through the halls at your own pace or join one of the free guided tours offered daily. Along the way, you’ll learn about Texas history, government, and fun Capitol facts—like the legend behind the Goddess of Liberty statue perched at the top.

Outside, the Capitol grounds are just as impressive, with 22 acres of tree-lined paths, historical monuments, and shady spots perfect for relaxing or snapping a postcard-worthy photo with the dome in the background.

Whether you're a history buff, architecture enthusiast, or just looking for a family-friendly activity near downtown, the Texas State Capitol is an easy and enriching addition to your Austin itinerary. Bonus: it’s close enough to swing by on your way to tacos, live music, or a whiskey tasting! 😁

9. Watch the Sunset From a Rooftop Bar

There’s no better way to end the day than with a cold drink and a Texas sunset. Head to rooftops like P6 at The LINE Hotel, Edge at JW Marriott, or The Upside at East Austin Hotel for stunning views and solid cocktails.

(Or stop by the Standard Proof tasting room first for a whiskey cocktail to-go before heading up! 😉)

10. Catch a Show at Joe Rogan’s Comedy Mothership

One of the coolest nights we had in Austin? Catching a live show at the Comedy Mothership, the city’s hottest new comedy club launched by Joe Rogan. Tucked right on Sixth Street, the venue has quickly built a reputation for hosting some of the biggest names—and rising stars—in stand-up, all in a small, intimate setting that puts you up close to the action.

Before the show, we grabbed cocktails at Mitzi’s Bar, located inside the venue. It’s a stylish lounge named in honor of Mitzi Shore, legendary comedy club owner, talent scout, and the real-life mother of actor Pauly Shore—she’s been deemed the “Godmother of standup comedy.” Her influence on the stand-up world is impossible to overstate, and the bar is a thoughtful tribute to her legacy.

Once inside the theater, be ready to go completely tech-free. All phones and smart devices are securely locked in pouches for the duration of the show—a move that keeps the atmosphere focused and respectful, allowing comedians to test new material without distractions or recordings. It might feel strange at first, but honestly, the experience is totally worth it. You get to be fully present, laugh harder, and enjoy the kind of raw, unfiltered comedy that’s hard to find anywhere else.

If you’re a fan of stand-up or just looking for an unforgettable night out in Austin, the Comedy Mothership is a must. Grab a drink, lock up your phone, and settle in for a night of real laughs.
